Animal blood donation: a little of their courage, a lot of our care

For a pet in hospital, every helping hand — and paw — can make a difference.

When a dog is missing from their usual spot on the sofa, the house feels a little too big. When a cat is in hospital, we would give so much to hear that familiar purr again. These vulnerable companions, and the people who love them, are in our thoughts as we support this animal blood donation day with CHV Frégis.

On 16 October 2026, four dogs and four cats are needed to lend a helping paw to other animals. The centre provides the care; we volunteer to handle the return journeys for donors whose participation has been confirmed. As for our little heroes, there will be no speeches to prepare. The cat will be pleased: the diary was already full of naps.

Could your dog or cat be one of our little heroes?

Before picturing them in a hero’s bandana, let’s talk about their wellbeing. For this collection, Frégis is looking for four donors of each species and reviews every application. These are the initial requirements:

  • Good general health and up-to-date vaccinations.
  • No recent travel: tell the centre about any trips your companion has taken.
  • Never having received a blood transfusion.
  • At least three months since their last donation, according to the appeal for this event.

One detail needs checking with Frégis: the announcement for 16 October mentions three months between donations, while the general information document recommends four to six months. The centre will tell you which interval is right for your pet and also check their weight, travel history and any treatments. Their health comes first.

Animal blood donation also requires checks of blood groups and compatibility between donor and recipient. Your dog may be the friendliest on the street, but the veterinary team always has the final say.

Attentive care, reassuring guidance and a day to plan

Leaving your pet in someone else’s care, even for a good cause, can raise questions. Frégis plans a health examination, a full blood test and collection under mild sedation. The vets will explain the care involved and the instructions to follow before and after donation. Tell them about anything that worries you: nobody knows your animal’s little habits quite as well as you do.

Follow the centre’s guidance on food, medicines, sedation and returning home. Even a small concern is worth a question; you do not have to work everything out yourself. If your schedule prevents you from staying, Frégis also offers morning drop-off and evening collection, to be arranged directly with its team.

A souvenir photo, small gifts and dry pet food provided by Hill’s are also announced, along with refreshments for families. Some dogs will already have their best smile ready for the photo. The cats will probably reserve the right to choose their best side.

Animal blood donation: support for those waiting for better days

Behind a bag of donated blood, there may be a dog weakened by significant blood loss or a cat living with an illness. A transfusion may form part of treatment for severe anaemia or certain clotting disorders. The vets assess each patient’s needs.

These supplies have a limited shelf life. Donation sessions help replenish them; after collection, the teams prepare and store the blood products. Putting forward a donor helps the centre have resources available for companions who may need them.

Thinking of the person waiting for them to come home, too

Families know that waiting all too well: checking the phone, hoping for encouraging news, remembering the familiar face that usually asks for a stroke. Taking part in animal blood donation offers them something practical and caring, even if you have never met.

Everyone contributes what they can. A family puts their pet forward, the care team looks after the donor and recipients, and our team makes the journey easier. When an animal cannot donate, sharing the appeal is still a lovely way to help.

We take the wheel for their little paws

A medical appointment is already an important thing to organise. For this day with Frégis, we want to take one worry off your mind: transport to the veterinary centre. Our service offers registered animals free transport there and back, after the centre has confirmed their participation.

We plan your pet’s journey in Paris and Île-de-France with you: the pick-up point, the times provided by Frégis, the animal travelling and whether someone will accompany them. This lets us arrange their arrival and return around the centre’s information. Your companion has their own habits; take a moment to tell us about them.

This free return journey is offered on a voluntary basis only to donors registered for the event on 16 October 2026. Transport must be arranged with our team before the day: confirmation of the veterinary appointment comes first.

A carrier, a lead, a favourite comfort toy to discuss with the team… Our guides to travelling with your dog and preparing your cat’s transport offer practical pointers for their belongings and their space in the vehicle. Behind every detail is a passenger we want to look after thoughtfully. Our whiskered co-pilot is welcome to supervise, but we will keep hold of the wheel.

Contact the centre, then we will plan the journey with you

  1. Tell the Frégis team about your companion

To put your animal forward for Friday 16 October 2026, contact CHV Frégis by phone on 01 49 85 83 00 or at contact@fregis.com. You can also access registration through the official Frégis animal blood donation page, or use the QR code in the leaflet below.

  2. Wait for approval before arranging transport

The centre reviews the health information and tells you whether your pet has been selected. Ask for the appointment times and instructions for the visit. Submitting the form is an application: you still need confirmation from Frégis.

  3. Let us know the journey details

Once registration is confirmed, call us at 07 63 11 94 94. Mention the Frégis event on 16 October, the pick-up address, appointment times, the companion taking part and anyone accompanying them. We will arrange their free return journey together.

Animal blood donation: questions you may be wondering about

My cat is still a kitten: can they take part?

A kitten under one year old does not meet the stated criteria for this event. The cats sought are aged 1 to 12 years and weigh at least 3.5 kg, subject to the centre’s approval. Your little whiskered companion can carry on growing at their own pace; you can already help by spreading the word.

My pet is full of energy: is that enough to be a donor?

Chasing a ball or inspecting every cupboard does not replace medical checks. Frégis reviews the application, medical history and examination results before accepting a donation. Turning a pet down also protects them: they will still be your little hero.

How can I arrange things if I cannot stay with my pet?

Discuss this with Frégis when registering. The centre says it can offer care from morning until evening, to be arranged with its team. Once the times are confirmed, pass them on to us so we can plan both journeys.

Will our little passenger have to pay for transport?

For animals registered for this event on 16 October 2026, we volunteer to provide free transport there and back. Frégis must first confirm participation, then the journey must be arranged with our team. There is no need to check under those paws for a purse.

How can I help if my companion cannot donate?

Sharing the appeal may help it reach the right family. Pass the centre’s contact details and the donation date on to people you know. Your older dog, kitten or ineligible cat can stay cosy at home: your support counts too.

Care in our hearts, help in our actions

For every familiar little face, and everyone who loves them

Thank you to the families who will take time to find out more, to the Frégis teams who will care for the animals, and to everyone who will share this appeal. We are happy to help with the journeys on this day.

A dog with a tireless tail or a cat with a wonderfully dignified expression: each keeps their own personality. The bandanas in our illustrations suit them rather well; their real strength comes from all the care we give them.

Help this animal blood donation appeal travel further: somewhere, a family may be able to answer it with their companion.
